How to Calculate Semester GPA

Your Semester GPA (SGPA) is calculated by taking the sum of (grade points × credit hours) for all subjects in that semester, divided by the total credit hours for that semester.

SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

Calculated for a single semester

From SGPA to CGPA

Once you have SGPA values for multiple semesters, you can calculate your overall CGPA:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Semester GPA?

Semester GPA (also called SGPA — Semester Grade Point Average) is the grade point average calculated for a single semester only. It reflects your academic performance in that specific term, weighted by each subject's credit hours.

How is Semester GPA different from CGPA?

Semester GPA is calculated for one semester only, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average of all semester GPAs across your entire degree program. CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits.

What is a good Semester GPA?

On India's 10-point scale, a Semester GPA of 8.5+ is excellent, 7.5–8.4 is very good, and 6.5–7.4 meets most placement cutoffs. Aim for consistent semester GPAs to build a strong CGPA.

Can one bad semester GPA affect my CGPA significantly?

Yes, but its impact reduces as you complete more semesters. A low SGPA in early semesters has more impact on CGPA than one in later semesters, since CGPA is a cumulative weighted average. Recovering with good performance in subsequent semesters can stabilize your CGPA.
